National Nutrition Month Tip #13

Raw Garlic!

I recently told my husband that my latest favorite smoothie was spinach, banana, and garlic – he looked at me like I was a little bit crazy.  Garlic?!

Raw garlic is great for boosting the immune system, which is important especially during cold and flu season.  It has also been shown to lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and to fight infection.  If you’re not up to trying raw garlic in food, you can get it in capsule form.  Here are a few ways you can get it through food:

  • Guacamole – homemade guacamole is a great place to infuse some raw garlic, as it will give a powerful bite and delicious flavor
  • Hummus – you don’t need much to make a great hummus, and you an add whatever flavors you enjoy, including a clove of raw garlic
  • Green smoothie with 1 cup water, 1 frozen banana, ½-1 cup greens (I love spinach), 1 small clove of garlic.  This is a variation of the “one Tough Banana” smoothie from Green Smoothie Revolution by Victoria Boutenko.
