National Nutrition Tip #16

Sunshine!

Vitamin D plays an important role in calcium absorption in the body and it is important to make sure that you get enough.

There have been many reports of vitamin D deficiency in pregnancy causing birth complications as well as having negative impact on people much later in life if their mother’s were deficient during pregnancy.

A great way to get vitamin D (and some always needed fresh air!) is by going outside in sunny weather.  Just 10 minutes spent outside during the hours of 10 and 4 can help to prevent deficiency.

In the winter, and in places that do not get as much sunlight, you can get vitamin D in cod liver oil, fish, egg yolk, foods that have been fortified with the vitamin and in supplements.

A bonus of getting vitamin D through sunshine, is that time outdoors on a sunny day almost always gives you a mood and energy boost!  Take a walk outside at lunch, enjoy the refreshing air, and soak up some sun!
