The Gift of Sharing Ritual

We walked from the funeral home to the church, and that’s when the tears finally started to fall. “I knew they would come at some point,” I said to my mom and my husband. I felt like we were leading a parade which felt strange, but the walk outside was nice. Fresh air always comforts me.

After the funeral mass (not one of my rituals, but one that was no doubt sacred for my grandmother), we traveled to the cemetery. My grandfather was buried here too and it is one of the most beautiful and peaceful cemeteries I’ve been to. Nestled in the mountains, the stone markers are flat and you feel like you’re in a park. The tent was set up and we made our way to the open grave.

Here comes the part where my mother introduced a tradition that she has come to hold sacred to her family, many of whom had never known of it or experienced it before this day.

I’m paraphrasing her beautiful words, but it went something like this…

“We’re going to borrow from a Jewish tradition and cover mom with earth, in a blanket of love. This is seen as one of the highest gifts that you can give to a person because it cannot be repaid. In truth, I think mom prepaid us in so many ways. If you would like to stay and help us with this, know that it will take some time for them to take the tent down, bring the earth over and be ready for us to begin.”

And, in what felt like magic, almost everyone stayed to help. We waited amidst a sea of gnats, swatting them away, taking walks, finding the graves of other relatives who will always be missed and loved, having healing conversations, and then we gathered again.

We covered my grandmother in a blanket of love, all of us taking turns with the shovels, watching the casket disappearing into the earth, and then I heard my mom’s family members come up to her and share their reactions.

“Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity.”
“I had seen this before but never participated, thank you.”

I remember when my paternal grandmother died. I was 14 and heartbroken and could not pick the shovel up, even though a cousin of mine told me it would be healing. I could not take on that ritual at the time, but I have since been guided back to it, and found much healing and comfort in it.

One way Sacred Ritual showed up for my grandma was in tending to her roses.

One way Sacred Ritual showed up for my grandma was in tending to her roses.

Sharing our sacred rituals can be scary. It is an act of vulnerability. But what a gift when we share something new that changes how someone sees and experiences the world.

There are rituals around birth and death, but there are rituals that fall between, during day-to-day life, and those have been the ones that I’ve found to be most sacred because they are daily touchstones to help ground, center, and bring me into the present moment.

My heart is full when I think of what Sacred Ritual Everyday has become, sharing of not only some of my favorite rituals, but a look into what sacred ritual means to some incredible women who I am excited to share with you.

If you are curious about expanding your definition of sacred ritual into something that feels authentically you, Sacred Ritual Everyday may be calling you in….

What the Process of Growing a Business Has Taught Me about Preparing to Grow a Baby

Creating Fertile Ground Circle brandedWhen I started Womb to World Wellness in 2011, I already knew the feeling of desire very well, as I had experienced it through the desire for a baby. I learned a lot along that journey, but sometimes we need to learn lessons more than once before we can fully begin to integrate them into our lives. As I open the Creating Fertile Ground Circle, some of that vulnerability comes back for me, and I wanted to share that with you today.

This is not the first time I have launched a group program. I have now run a few successful programs (my favorite until now being Growing with Gratitude), but back in 2012 I tried for the first time, and what felt then like failure left me feeling raw and unsure of myself.

I had just run I Want One (or another one) for the first time, and it was amazing. More women than I had expected joined me for that week of gentle emails, welcoming them to see what this journey could be like. I was excited at the idea of having some of them join me as we dove deeper into that content, exploring and beginning to flesh out how they could start creating these changes with ease. So I opened registration, spread the word, and waited. Crickets. Nothing. Nada. And as quickly as my excitement had risen, it deflated.

I questioned myself, I questioned the work I was doing, I questioned my business, and I looked for new paths to travel. I ran a couple of programs geared towards mamas instead of those dreaming about becoming mamas, and while they were well received, they didn’t light me up like this preconception work does.

As I just shared with my mastermind group, “we drive ourselves crazy with expectations.” This is true whether our expectations are about our businesses, our future babies, or simply our daily lives.

Everything shifted for me when I surrendered, released the expectations and let myself be guided by my passion.

Surrender means to cease resistance. Do you often find yourself fighting, struggling, and working what feels like too hard to reach your dream? That is the resistance, and I can promise you that most of the time it will keep you stuck. When you surrender to what is, you gain a clearer vision of what is possible, what needs to happen to get you unstuck and moving with flow towards your dream.

Releasing expectations means to open up and let go. Let go for a moment of what you expect this journey to look like. Let go for a moment of what others expect of you. Open up to understanding that your path is unfolding as it is for some reason. It might suck. It might hurt like hell. It might make you question what you’re doing right or wrong. And I’m sorry if you’re feeling that – I know those feelings too.  It is about trust.

Being guided by your passion means focusing your energy on what makes you thrive. When you create the space to fill your life with what lights you up, what brings you joy, and what brings you happiness, you create an energy about you that attracts what you most desire, because you are in flow.

It was awful when I put myself out there 2 years ago and heard crickets, but you know what? I wasn’t ready like I am now.

I wasn’t ready like I am now to hold space for those women.

I wasn’t ready like I am now to run a program that feels completely in flow.

I wasn’t ready like I am now to surrender to the process.

I wasn’t ready like I am now to release the expectations and enjoy the journey.

I wasn’t really like I am now to trust in my passion and let it guide me.

I just spent a day at a mini-retreat, creating much of the content for the Creating Fertile Ground Circle, and let me tell you, it’s nothing like I could have created two years ago. And I’m so excited that you’re here with me now to have the chance to experience it.

I know now that the women who are meant to Circle together in this group will be drawn to it and know that it is what is the right next step for them. If you are one of them, I look forward to connecting with you more deeply soon! You can learn more and join us here.

Gratitude is in the Cards

The other night, I was sitting at my desk, magazines and clippings surrounding me.

I had struggled through the day but managed to find my way to gratitude throughout, in the small moments.

Wondering where to go next, I shuffled the cards that sooth me. I shuffled. I shuffled. The pack split open and three cards floated free. The fourth, from the bottom, came to greet them.

Participiation.

Beyond Illusion.

Moment to Moment.

We are the World.

Yes, my soul whispered, this is what it’s all about, and I knew that these cards were speaking about the group gathering for Growing with Gratitude.

growing with gratitude

Participation – Hands outstretched in a circle. Here is my soul, opening to yours in this safe space, awakening to the energy of a powerful community.

Beyond Illusion – Mind expanding into butterfly wings, ready to take off and soar as a new version of you emerges from all that you hold within.

Moment to Moment – The only way we ever truly live our lives, one step at a time, one foot in front of the other. Each step is taken with deep trust.

We are the World – We dance, rejoice, and hold hands as we come together from everywhere, in one place – this place of gratitude. Creating the light that we wish to see in the world, and spreading it in every way we know how.

The messages of the cards to you:

Participation “You have an opportunity to participate with others now to make your contribution to creating something greater and more beautiful than each of you could manage alone. Your participation will not only nourish you, but will also contribute something precious to the whole.”

Beyond Illusion “Drop your opinionated mind and move inside. There, you can relax into your own deepest truth, where the difference between dream and reality is already known.”

Moment to Moment “Be available to what comes your way, as it comes. And don’t worry if you stumble or fall; just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, have a good laugh, and carry on.”

We are the World “When we recognize the common source of our humanity, the common origins of our dreams and longings, our hopes and fears, we are able to see that we are all joined together in the great miracle of existence.”

We are approaching the eve of Growing with Gratitude, and our 30 day journey begins tomorrow. Will you join us? Your first step is to click here.

Gratitude as Growth (this is what it’s all about!)

gratitude for the future

We don’t grow by looking back, we grow by looking to our future.

When you get clear, crystal clear, on what it is that you want in your life, when you dream it so much you begin to believe it, when you express gratitude for these dreams – that’s when the magic begins to happen.

Most of the time, we stay stuck in the past. We focus on what hasn’t worked, we focus on regrets, we focus on all the little things that add up in our mind to a life filled with negativity. That’s no way to live!

Gratitude can pull you out of the past and into the future, leaving you free to dream the biggest dreams you can and truly believe that they can become your reality.

Gratitude can pull the dreams out of the depths of your soul and into the light.

Gratitude can help you create the vision of the life you want to be living.

Gratitude can help you start to live that life right now.

When you are grateful for your dream, your vision, everything you do in life becomes colored by the feelings that live behind that dream.

When you live the feeling of your dreams, everything else begins to fall into place.

Gratitude as Connection

gratitude practice

We get nowhere by ourselves. Life is a constant collaboration between the people who help and support us, and those who we help and support. You know it feels amazing to be on either side of that, and acknowledging and expressing gratitude for those moments deepens the power of their impact.

Often, we move through our lives without fully expressing gratitude for all that we have done for others (yes, you can be grateful for that!) and for all of the support we have received. Even with our close friends and loved ones, we say “thank you” and “I love you” and of course we mean them, but how deeply are they felt when they become part of our routine to say?

When is the last time you felt truly connected to someone or to an experience that you had? I’m talking about taking a moment to pause, to really soak in the love and support of another, to look them in the eyes and express how much it meant to you.

This is the magic of gratitude. It’s about so much more than expressing thanks.

It’s about deepening our connections with the world around us.

It’s about strengthening our relationships.

It’s about expressing ourselves fully.

It’s about truly living our experiences instead of simply having them.

This is part of what Growing with Gratitude is all about, and I hope that you’ll join us.

Gratitude as Forgiveness

gratitude as forgivenessThis is deep work. This is deep magic.

Here’s what I recently said to a friend about this, “Yes, you have to do the work, feel it, and move through it. But then you get to experience your shining self!”

What have you wanted to let go of?

What is it that you’ve held onto for far too long?

What load are you ready to put down?

What can you release that will help you feel lighter, freer, and ready to move forward?

That’s what gratitude as forgiveness gets to the heart of. It gives you the strength that you might not have even known you had within you so that you can move away from the gunk that gets in the way of living the life you are ready to embrace.

The dark parts of our lives thrive on darkness and staying hidden. That’s what helps them grow. When we shed light on them, when we hold them with compassion, they loosen their grip on our lives and we begin to be able to release them, to free ourselves.

We will start with self-care to set up your strength and foundation, and then we’ll move into the tough stuff. It’s okay to be unsure of what this week will bring because you will be surrounded by support and love.

Are you ready to let go of the past and fly into your future?

Gratitude as Self-Care

gratitude practice

If you’ve heard me talk about self-care before, you know that I believe taking care of yourself is the foundation for your health, your family, and your happiness.

Self-Care comes in many forms – including making time for the things you love, nourishing yourself with delicious food, and making a gratitude practice part of your routine.

A gratitude practice is an act of self-care that you can fit into the tiny crevices of your day. You can make this part of your evening routine as you wind down from the day and get ready for rest. You can make this part of your morning, just a few moments, to get your day off to set the lens through which you view your day.

Gratitude is a way to take care of yourself by shifting your mindset from negativity to positivity.

Gratitude is a way to take care of yourself by reminding yourself of the beautiful moments that often slip between the cracks of the frustrations and complications.

Gratitude is a way to take care of yourself by making a little bit of time for you to process all that happens during the waking hours.

Gratitude is a way to take care of yourself by creating  life filled with joy.

In the first week of Growing with Gratitude, we’ll be focusing more on gratitude as self-care. By the end of the first week, you will feel more love for yourself, more compassion towards yourself, and more open to receiving the beauty of life.

I do hope you join us. The community is growing and powerful!

Why Gratitude?

Growing with GratitudeThis is the time of year when the idea of giving thanks comes up, but the idea of gratitude gets lost in the mix of pumpkins, turkeys, and either looking forward to or mentally preparing for time spent with family.

This year, let’s make it different. Let’s carry that idea of gratitude not only through the entire month of November, but let’s keep it going as we move forward through the holiday season and into the new year. If you’re intrigued and ready to get started, click here. If you’re curious but still wondering why gratitude, keep reading!

You know that feeling you get when you do something for someone and they respond in a way that makes you realize that they truly appreciate you?

You know that feeling you get when someone does something for you and even if it’s something little it makes your day?

You know that feeling when you sit down and realize that you don’t have to anything other than just be, even if only for a minute, because you decided that’s what you need?

You know that feeling when something truly awful happens in your life, but you realize that you’re still breathing, and you realize that above all else, that matters?

Gratitude is a doorway to joy, to happiness, to abundance, and to comfort amidst the difficult situations that we all face in life.

Gratitude is a simple practice. It can be done mentally in seconds, and if you begin to keep a gratitude journal, it can be just minutes a day.

Throughout the week, I’ll be sharing in more detail why gratitude acts as self-care, as forgiveness, as connection, and as growth, so be sure to check back each day this week (or sign up in the box to the right to receive new blogs posts in your inbox).

Effects of Toxins on Reproductive Health

toxin reducing plantsThere are a lot of anxious and overwhelmed pregnant and thinking-about-being-pregnant women out there right now, and I don’t want you to be one of them. If you’ve heard the recent news about the opinion paper written by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, I want you to know that I’ve got your back. This is exactly what I’m here to support you with. So take a deep breath and give yourself a few minutes to read what I have to share with you.

“Robust scientific evidence has emerged over the past 15 years, demonstrating that preconception and prenatal exposure to toxic environmental agents can have a profound and lasting effect on reproductive health across the life course.”

This was the opening sentence in the ACOG Committee Opinion NO. 575 and a concept that I am very familiar with. The fact that the evidence has been growing is a positive, because it highlights another area where you have power and control over your health and the health of your family. From the time before you conceive your baby, you can create change that will impact your health and your future baby’s health for the rest of your lives – and that may even impact your grandchildren’s health (I wrote more about that here).

Some of the key points that are important for you to know and that I want to talk to you about a bit more:

“An analysis of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from 2003-2004 found that virtually every pregnant woman in the United States is exposed to at least 43 different chemicals.”

Women use an average of 12 personal care products every day, and most of them contain numerous chemicals, many of them toxic. We turn the hot water on, open our pores, and welcome these toxins into our bodies. A study conducted by the Environmental Working Group in 2004 discovered that babies still in utero are exposed to almost 300 different chemicals before they are even born!

This is important but doesn’t need to feel hopeless. Many of the chemicals can be avoided by swapping out what you’re currently using for healthier products and by learning a few key tips that will protect your family’s health for generations to come.

“Prenatal exposure to environmental chemicals is linked to various adverse health consequences, and patient exposure at any point in time can lead to harmful reproductive health outcomes.”

The last few decades have seen a significant spike in incidences of birth defects, autism, infertility, cancer and more. In some cases, these have been linked to the chemicals in our products. I’m not suggesting that reducing your toxic exposure can completely reduce your risk of these occurrences to zero, but it will help you know that you are doing all that is within your control, and that’s huge. I wrote more about this over on mom-blog just last week. Taking action as soon as you can (whether this is before you conceive or during pregnancy) can help you and your family stay as healthy as possible.

“Patient-centered actions can reduce body burdens of toxic chemicals (ie: the total amount of chemicals present in the human body at any one time).”

This is so important! This is all about what you can do, and it’s true – there is so much that’s in your control, and that’s what I’m here to help support you with. It’s easy to become easily overwhelmed but when you have someone to take your hand and guide you through what steps you can take to systematically reduce your body burden, it becomes empowering and fun. Knowing what actions you can take and getting the support you need to make them happen is an incredible gift that you can give yourself and your family.

“When an activity raises threats of harm to human health or the environment, precautionary measures should be taken even if some cause and effect relationships are not fully established scientifically.”

We don’t need to wait until all of the evidence is in, because we’ll be waiting for a long time and by then it will be too late. When the EWG tested blood samples of the babies in utero and discovered the presence of almost 300 chemicals, many of them had been banned 30 years before the samples were tested. These chemicals hang around in the environment for a long time and the sooner we can do what is within our control to reduce our exposure to them, the better. There’s no better time to start than right now.

Stay tuned for some exciting ways that you can take action with ease and support! Be the first to know by clicking here.

Remember – “We do what we can as we move forward, and we release any guilt of what we didn’t know.” Let’s move forward together.

Can You See It? The Power of Visioning Your Baby

infinite waterI just got back from a few days at the beach. Breathing in the ocean air, watching the waves come in, go out, come in again – these things always bring me a sense of peace even amidst turmoil. They are a reminder to me of how small and yet how infinite I am. Each drop of water seems so small but if these drops could think, and each one thought, “I am nothing. I am small. I am unimportant. I do not need to be here,” their lights would dim and the ocean would cease to be.

Just as the ocean needs each drop of water to be what it is, so to do we need each little moment of our lives to make up our greater experience, and so to does the world need each of us, to be part of the infinite and amazing.

It is when thinking about the infinite and amazing and about what is possible, that visioning has played an important role in my journey.

Sometimes it’s typing; sometimes it’s writing with pen and paper.

Sometimes the vision starts small and grows; sometimes it spirals inward.

Sometimes it’s quiet; sometimes the music must be rocking my body, my soul.

Sometimes it’s movement; sometimes stillness is what I seek.

Sometimes there’s thinking; sometimes there’s just flow.

Sometimes I begin; sometimes I end.

Always, I get to where I need to be in the moment.

Visioning is about sometimes. It is about coaxing the dream out of your heart, the one that is nestled deep in there, hidden and tucked away, blanketed by fear. It is about shedding light on that dream, on loving it up, on breathing life into it.

See it.

Hear it.

Smell it.

Taste it.

Feel it.

Live it.

You have the power sweet one, to take your dreams and turn them into reality. The big ones, the small ones. All of them.

Maybe you dream of awakening your mama spirit, that part of you that yearns to create, to grow, to nourish. I was talking to a client recently about mama spirit, and she said, “I want that!” “You have it,” I assured her. She does, and so do you.

It’s time to explore, to excavate the parts of yourself that have stayed hidden for so long – the passionate pieces of your soul that are longing for fresh air to breathe.

It sounds, and it probably feels, like a long and difficult journey. Remember that there is no real destination. Now is the destination, always. You go one step at a time, piecing together all that you’ve taught yourself throughout your life, and letting your beautiful life unfold.

Let go of the how, and embrace what you most desire.
